Today we are continuing on with Act III.i, studying Hamlet's famous "to be or not to be" soliloquy. We read lines 1-90 yesterday as a class and began to answer questions. Today we will watch this section of the film, review some of the questions from the graphic organizer yesterday, and answer a few more questions as a class. Class will end with a Quick Write in your journals.
Re-read or Film (5 min): (Part 4 11:22-end) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXbXPY0g6kA
(Part 5 beginning) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpCORDkXfIA
Review (10 min)
Go over questions people struggled with yesterday.
New Questions (10 min)
Resolution means: "a decision or determination; a resolve." What metaphor does Hamlet use to compare "thought" (85) and "resolution" (84)?
How does this metaphor relate to Hamlet's life?
What is the relationship between Hamlet's two major concerns in this soliloquy?
What central ideas are developed in this soliloquy?
Why do you think the "to be or not to be" soliloquy is famous?
Hypothesize: What do you think is going to happen with the play Hamlet stages? What will happen to the characters - Hamlet, Claudius, Gertrude, etc.
Quick Write (10-15 min)
In your journal, analyze Hamlet's attitude toward life and death, noting Shakespeare's specific use of metaphor and language that is fresh, engagin, and beautiful.
