Learning Target: I can read closely for textual details

For the two individuals who finished, please find a group or individual to support with your comments and ideas.  Try to get as much done as possible, but do not sacrifice substance. I will collect everyone's work at the end of class. Those who have not finished will have an opportunity on Monday, whilst I have a "silent discussion" activity for those who have completed the packet.

Here's the deal: Work productively today and Monday; on Tuesday we will have a community event to promote continued social harmony and acknowledge a job well done.

Thursday, November 20 Day 2 of "A Room of One's Own" organizer

Zahra's word of the day: fledgling: a person or

organization that is immature, inexperienced, or

underdeveloped. (also a baby bird)

"the fledgling democracies of eastern Europe"

For the most part, everyone was on task yesterday. I heard some excellent conversations related to the text. As well, everyone is successfully pulling out evidence from the text. Don't forget the annotation column. Keep in mind that there are no "right" answers here. This is where it is especially important to share ideas. You might note a connection, pose a question, make a personal comment about what you just read.

Learning Target: I can read closely for textual details
I can annotate a text to support my                                                    comprehension and analysis
I can engage in a productive, evidence-based                                       conversation
I can determine the meaning of unknown                                          vocabulary from contextual clues
I can generate and respond to questions in a                                        scholarly discourse.

In class: please take out your "A Room of One's Own" graphic organizer. Please find below the directions for the accountable talk exercise we will follow these next three days. At the end of each day, I will collect your completed work, for which you will receive a participation grade.

2.   I have broken down each section into three parts: text, questions / responses / annotation.

3.   With your partner, you will take turns reading aloud to each other.

Read  aloud –(one person down to “Shakespeare”, the other down to the “logic” on the first page.

4.   Continue in this manner for each section, again taking turns on the reading and responding to the questions.

Monday, November 17 vocab review / day 2 Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own

Learning target: how might Shakespeare's life and opportunities been impacted because of a patriarchal society?

In class: 1) collecting semi-colon material and reviewing the responses.
              2) review of this week's vocabulary
There will be two assessments tomorrow: "A Room of One's Own" vocabulary and semi-colons
              3) Take out the graphic organizer for Virginia Woolf's "A Room of One's Own".
Listen to a reading from "Be that it may....palace of the queen"
Reread independently, using the text as a source to fill in the graphic organizer. (class handout / copy below)
               4) Think about the following for a quick write tomorrow: how might Shakespeare's life and opportunities been impacted because of a patriarchal society?

Be that as it may, I could not help thinking, as I looked at the works
of Shakespeare on the shelf, that the bishop was right at least in this;
it would have been impossible, completely and entirely, for any woman to
have written the plays of Shakespeare in the age of Shakespeare.Let me
imagine, since facts are so hard to come by, what would have happened
had Shakespeare had a wonderfully gifted sister, called Judith, let us
say. Shakespeare himself went, very probably,--his mother was an
heiress--to the grammar school, where he may have learnt Latin--Ovid,
Virgil and Horace--and the elements of grammar and logic. He was, it is
well known, a wild boy who poached rabbits, perhaps shot a deer, and
had, rather sooner than he should have done, to marry a woman in the
neighbourhood, who bore him a child rather quicker than was right. That
escapade sent him to seek his fortune in London. He had, it seemed, a
taste for the theatre; he began by holding horses at the stage door.
Very soon he got work in the theatre, became a successful actor, and
lived at the hub of the universe, meeting everybody, knowing everybody,
practicing his art on the boards, exercising his wits in the streets,
and even getting access to the palace of the queen.
